Keeping with tradition, the four of us played “Settlers of Catan” — three games while Will slept. Breaking from tradition (which is that Skip usually beats us to pieces) I actually won *all three* games! (Granted, they were seriously close games.) Still, we took it as a sign that this is going to be a good week of luck for me as I prepare to take comps on Thursday and Friday…yikes!

Man, Settlers of Catan was a bloodsport when we played in Seattle. Ish … we needed restraining orders from each others by the end of the game. But they were fun.

Don’t be deceived by the smiley picture, we are pretty serious about this game. (However compared to the blood and tears shed during a family Pictionary game, Catan is quite mild.) Paul and Skip held an embargo on all trade with me for the majority of the first and well into the second and third games (he argued that the US didn’t let the axis countries build up armies for years after WWII.) Emily and I were neck-and-neck for the win for all three, and Paul and Skip were close in as well. (I had a trend of gaining points early and then stalling for the last few.) Interestingly, we noticed that the conversation on the game kept focusing on “the luck of the dice,” whereas when they had a good play, the conversation was around “skill” in the game.
