Regular dishes on life in New Orleans, historic home renovation, raising kids, completing a PhD, travel near and far, global concerns, and health issues.
You know the story, right? International health... work all over the place... drag my kids around in sacks through villages in Central America... yadda yadda. I decided to go for another degree, so in 2004 we moved to New Orleans with no intention of staying. Then Katrina. And then *blink*blink* New Orleans is a completely different place and we just can't leave. Suddenly I'm on TV talking about immigrants and health and Paul is starting a company. Or two. His side is high-tech, mine is community health and our lives are yearly evacuation, regular celebrations, and nonstop work here, there, and everywhere. Our door is always open. I only ask that if you decide to go ahead and make yourself that mint julep, you make one for me, too.
We strive to make our life our argument.

Christoph as book editor:
In 2nd picture, the Upside Down man appears to be Howard Dean, levitating and apparently on a cocktail of drugs. He appears to be yelling “IAVILVL,” which can be translated roughly as “YAAAHHH!!” The man on the left appears to be a stricken Sen. Tom Harkin, who appeared on stage with Dean that fateful night.
3rd picture, left to right: bad guy is a Star Wars Tie Fighter with Legs, 1st good guy is a floating invertebrate (perhaps a jellyfish) and the 2nd good guy is obviously Sen. John McCain (note the big, potato-shaped head). At the top of the page, Howard Dean reappears, still screaming and perhaps lighting something on fire. I know it says “water,” but water doesn’t burn red. So perhaps this is Howard Dean lighting Lake Erie on fire once again in Cleveland.
4th picture: I have no clue what this is.
5th picture: I have no clue what this is, and I’m very disturbed by it.

The “ILAVILAL” stuff is a combination of the names “WILL” and “AVA.” Ava is one of his girlfriends at school. Everything he does has either Ana or Ava written into it. In his words, “Ana and Ava are my best girls.”

Cool. Little man’s regulating!
In all seriousness, it’s cool you’re spending time with him doing projects like this. One of the regrets of my childhood is that I never had a parent who spent time with me to develop my creative energies into positive expression.
