Regular dishes on life in New Orleans, historic home renovation, raising kids, completing a PhD, travel near and far, global concerns, and health issues.
You know the story, right? International health... work all over the place... drag my kids around in sacks through villages in Central America... yadda yadda. I decided to go for another degree, so in 2004 we moved to New Orleans with no intention of staying. Then Katrina. And then *blink*blink* New Orleans is a completely different place and we just can't leave. Suddenly I'm on TV talking about immigrants and health and Paul is starting a company. Or two. His side is high-tech, mine is community health and our lives are yearly evacuation, regular celebrations, and nonstop work here, there, and everywhere. Our door is always open. I only ask that if you decide to go ahead and make yourself that mint julep, you make one for me, too.
We strive to make our life our argument.

How old does a kid have to be before seeing the movie “Showboat”?
I think I must’ve been five myself. Mom and dad were all settled down to watching a movie on TV at night, I was playing with toys in a nearby room. Then this booming deep voice came on, “Old man river, dat old man river/ He must know sometin, but he don’t say nuthin’…” Why, I just had to go see who that was singing. It was something else. I even tried to sing that low in imitation, causing my dad to choke on his beer. Ahhh…the Sixties.

The kids have had decent exposure to the songs, most definitely to Ol’ Man River — Robeson version (of course), Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man, and Make Believe. If nothing else, my kids will have solid working knowledge of classic American musicals. Will has seen parts of The Music Man, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady (“Loverly” is one of his favorite songs), and — his favorite — Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Showboat would be a good one, too!

Fabulous — the stuff of dreams! I feel like I can count on one hand the number of days each year that aren’t extraordinary. In my opinion, we have great weather here, even in August!
