Ever the scourge of mankind, our insurance has denied my emergency c-section costs and Kate’s emergency procedures at birth saying that we needed pre-authorization… for an unplanned, emergency, rushed to the hospital, procedure and subsequent hospitalization.
But they did cover several tests done on both of us during our stay. Hmmm…
We’re gearing up for another head-ache.

Holly,
Your insurance has a mechanism to dispute claims. If you followed the rules about reporting the emergency to them, they are obligated to pay for the care. If you can’t get it worked out easily, see if there is a hospital social worker who can help.
Good luck

We followed the rules — it turns out the hospital did not! They were suppose to call after my admittance to the ER to report that they had admitted me through the emergency room, were performing surgery, and were going to hospitalize us for a few days. I guess this is standard procedure for emergency cases? For some reason, that did not happen. So, the hospital is actually appealing the claim. We spent an hour on 3 and 4 way calls this afternoon with the hospital and different insurance reps to figure this out. What a mess!
