It was too easy this afternoon. I should have known right off the bat that it was too easy, I was lucky, it wasn’t always going to be like this.
Will saw right through the “medicine in the chocolate milk” tonight. While he was content to hold his milk (“my milk!” he told us over and over again), he was not so interested in drinking it. We tried a “big boy cup” (ie: a regular glass) and got a few sips. We went to a sippy cup, without regulator, and got a few more. Then we went to the straw, where we got the most. Then back to a regular sippy cup with regulator, which crashed and burned.
So, we then went the old-fashioned route: spoon forced into the mouth. Will has developed a great technique for holding liquid in his mouth until the convenient moment when he can spit it out. So, that didn’t go over too well.
*sigh* Well, he *did* drink half of the milk… and maybe some of the medicine went down via the spoon… we’ll have to catch him when he is thirsty at meal times. Better luck tomorrow, we decided. And Will went off to bed.
Any and all techniques of getting a toddler to take medicine are appreciated!

I’m not sure, Holly, but I thought that you could also get amoxicillin in chewable tablets.
Why don’t you ask Will what he wants to drink with his medicine? Don’t give him a choice about taking it, but about how he wants to do it.
I never found it easy to get my kids to take medicine without some fuss, but they did take it when they could control some aspect of the process.
Good luck on this one.
I hope you both feel much better quickly.

I would definitely try chewable… I wonder if I can talk the pharamist here in Mobile into some? Then I could crush it into food.
As for conversation over it, he’s really not verbal enough to understand the concept of “medicine” and just doesn’t like being forced to do anything. When he is not feeling well, every question you ask him is answered “no, thank you.”
We also tried holding his nose… no luck. He can still spit everything out.

How about this idea…give him the spoon of medicine with the enticement of his favorite sweet to follow it up? Yes, it’s bribing but if he knows there is a positive to doing it. The other thing that was recommended was getting one of the “syringe” type medicine dispensers which means holding his mouth open and “shooting” it straight back into his throat past the spitting capabilities.
Sorry he’s not feeling well!
